The sequel was announced in May 2012, after the successful release of The Avengers. Whedon, the director of the first film, was brought back on board in August and a release date was set. By April 2013, Whedon had completed a draft of the script, and casting began in June with the re-signing of Downey.Second unit filming began in February 2014 in South Africa with principal photography taking place between March and August 2014. The film was primarily shot at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England, with additional footage filmed in Italy, South Korea, Bangladesh, New York, and various locations around England. While in post production, the film was converted to3D and over 3,000 visual effects shots were added.
Avengers: Age of Ultron premiered in Los Angeles on April 13, 2015, and was released on May 1, 2015 in North America, in 3D and IMAX 3D. The film received positive reviews from critics with most enjoying its extravagant albeit unmemorable action sequences and villain. Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film in history and the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2015. Two sequels, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, are scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, respectively

- Paul Giamatti as Chuck Rhoades, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Rhoades is ruthless, and has a particular distaste for wealthy criminals who try to buy their way out of justice. Despite his significant power as U.S. Attorney, Rhoades is dwarfed both by his more wealthy wife, and by his well-connected and very rich father.
- Damian Lewis as Bobby "Axe" Axelrod, an ambitious hedge fund king. He was the sole survivor of the hedge fund during the September 11 attacks, and thus pays for the college tuition of the children of his former colleagues. He is seen publicly to be extremely charitable and generous, but in reality he is a criminal thwarting justice for currently unknown crimes.
- Maggie Siff as Wendy Rhoades, M.D, psychiatrist, in-house performance coach at Axe Capital and wife of Chuck Rhoades. She is self-possessed, motivated and extremely successful. She has a strong relationship with Axelrod, her boss, but this is put in jeopardy when her husband tempts her with another job.
- Malin Åkerman as Lara Axelrod, wife of Bobby Axelrod and a former nurse. She is from a lower-class upbringing, but has now moved up in the world and left her former self behind. She is devoted to her husband and their children. Her brother Dean was a firefighter who died during the 9/11 attacks.
- Toby Leonard Moore as Bryan Connerty, Rhoades's point man.
- David Costabile as Mike "Wags" Wagner, the right-hand man for Axelrod.
- Condola Rashād as Kate Sacher, one of Rhoades's workers.
- Terry Kinney as an un-named mysterious man on Axelrod's payroll.
